Before retiring from the Nigeria public service in early 2019, Mallam Babagana was a Director at the Post Transaction Management Department of the Bureau of Public Enterprises where he was able to set up a results-based monitoring and evaluation framework for the post-privatization monitoring of privatized enterprises.

Previously, Mallam Babagana held various management positions in the public service at the Bureau of Public Enterprise, focusing on capital markets, post transaction risk management, and labor issues. He started his working career with the University of Maiduguri, where he taught sociology for 12 years, before he joined the services of the then National Electricity Power Authority as a senior manager in recruitment.

His current private consulting work focuses on governance in the Power sector of Nigeria
